The OpenQuote community has taken an interest in the area of microinsurance. There have been forum posts on the subject (examples: Micro insurance, Micro insurance - what can we do? and Does "Microinsurance" have a split personality?), and there is considerable enthusiasm in the community for solving the unique challenges presented by the microinsurance environment using a combination of open source development and cloud based deployments.

We believe that open source solutions deployed into the cloud will provide enormous benefits to microinsurance practitioners which include simplifying their every day tasks; reducing the costs associated with carrying out those tasks; improving responsiveness (especially important in the area of claims); and providing the metrics (key performance indicators) to allow the effectiveness of their operations to be judged.

A number of technology studies have been carried out in the area of microinsurance [links needs], but real world requirements from first-hand users are hard to come by. Open source projects live and die by the quality of contact between users and developers, so the lack of real world requirements is a major concern. However, this is very much a chicken-and-egg situation so we plan to build a system based on our current best understanding of the requirements in the hope that it will at least present a strawman to build from, but at best will provide something of actual benefit to users.

The pages in this section of the OpenQuote Wiki describe the system that the community is building.
