This scenario shows two overlapping temporary MTAs that have not yet been taken up. In this case, even though MTA 1 is not live, MTA 2 has been applied on top of MTA 1. MTA 2 is split into two parts, with part a detailing the cover when MTA 1 is also in effect, and part b detailing the cover after MTA 1 has expired. Here MTA 2 can only ever be accepted if MTA 1 is accepted first.
This scenario shows two overlapping temporary MTAs that were created before either had been taken up, both have been applied to the original policy. Here MTA 2 has been taken up, and so MTA 1 was automatically "Not taken up" and disabled (i.e. can no longer be taken up).
This scenario shows two overlapping temporary MTAs that have not yet been taken up. Because MTA 1 is not live, MTA 2 may (as in this case) be applied to the original policy and so does not get split into parts to accomodate MTA 1. If either MTA is taken up (made live), the other MTA automatically becomes "Not taken up" and is disabled, this is because each cover is based solely on the original policy.

Example MTA scenarios.There are many different scenarios that can be envisaged when it comes to MTA application, this document demonstrates a few significant ones, from a combination of which all scenarios can be made up.
This scenario shows a permanent MTA applied to the original policy, with a second temporary MTA applied on top of that.
This demonstrates a simple scenario of a single MTA being applied to a policy. The MTA is permanent, which simply means it does not have an expiry date. On renewal the new policy is based upon the version of the policy with the MTA applied.
This demonstrates a simple scenario of a single MTA being applied to a policy. The MTA is temporary, which simply means it has an expiry date. The expiry date of a temporary MTA cannot exceed the expiry date of the policy.
